Edgemead Garden City

In the late 1960’s, with Pinelands already established, Garden Cities began looking for a suitable site for development to meet the rapidly increasing demand for housing. During 1967 negotiations were concluded  for the acquisition of 263 hectares of gently sloping land at the foot of the Tygerberg Hills. With later acquisitions of adjoining land Edgemead now comprises over 340 hectares and over 3500 families.

Initial planning was commenced immediately after acquisition of the land, and in 1972 the first house was sold for R14 945. The layout plan was Garden Cities’ first experiment in designing a town to a pre-determined occupation density instead of on the basis of traditional regular erf sizes.

From the outset rigid standards were set to create and maintain a distinctive architectural character for the town and this was enhanced by the immediate commencement of a tree planting programme.

The success of these pioneering developments in residential town planning is evident from the fact that Edgemead is today a vibrant community of over 3500 families, and since it’s inception has experienced a demand for houses which has always outstripped supply.
